I was 28 when I had my first panic attack. Heart racing, couldn’t catch my breath long enough to calm myself down, I thought I was dying…
There I was, at my corporate job – lying on the floor, paramedics standing over me…only to find out it wasn’t a heart attack; it was anxiety, brought on by extreme stress.
Anxiety…? What? I couldn’t believe stress could cause such turmoil to me physically.“Here I am a bible reading, God-fearing, believer, having anxiety on the regular.” My stress lead to racing thoughts, that lead to anxiety, that lead to insomnia… a cycle I was ashamed to admit was controlling my life.
I was a little girl in the seventies where it was ingrained into our brains that we could be whatever we wanted to be, have successful careers and families and make it all happen without missing a beat. And so I tried. Many of us tried…
We nurtured our families and our careers… church, hobbies and our dreams… and now we are exhausted, we suffer from racing thoughts, anxiety, stress and insomnia.
Remember “Calgon… take me away”? Well, that may have worked for our moms and aunties, but it takes a bit more than that to calm our overactive brains. We have to create an atmosphere for healing and calm.
It wasn’t until a few years ago I started to do something different before bed. I began to oil myself down after my evening shower. I applied the oil as I prayed over myself. Something amazing happened….
It was the most calming, relaxing experience. My mind relaxed, my thoughts calmed and my skin reaped the benefits too!
